St Patricks, Kinpachi, Gion Bread & Phantom Limb

Konbanwa こんばんわ..
I passed my I1 Japanese exams! Boy was that a huge relieve, as I was pretty much prepared in retaking it another time. Thank heavens I didn’t have to. Now it is on to I2 demo I’m gonna take a break for a short while just so I can focus completely on my dissertation due on the 30th June this year. It has been given me sleepless nights, the fear of not completing it on time. Boy am I the procrastinating champion. I can’t do that now, as there is no more extensions allowed, hand it or fail it. Damn this cruel world.
I had Kinpachi for lunch after the exams. Located in Subang Jaya, just after the Subang Parade road leading to Kuala Lumpur. I had a bowl of their Kimuchi Katsudon. It was too much veggies and Kimchi stuffs for my liking. I was actually looking forward to have Tonkatsu, pork cutlets. However, to my dismay, what was presented then was only a mere few pieces. I felt like I was having a bowl of vegetable rice. Maybe it is just me, but I could have whipped up a better bowl of Katsudon… It came with a bowl of Miso and a saucer of pickles. The meal cost RM17.00. I didn’t finish my donburi. Feeling extremely thirsty and hot I decided to have a nice cool beer to cleanse the heat. And plus beer is a damn good tranquilizer for afternoon naps.
With so many Japanese diners in Subang, I wouldn’t head back there again.
I went over to Souled Out at night as well, a St. Patrick event was held there. I figured, they would have some sort of Guinness Draft promotion there as they were heavily promoting it for a good whole month. I was utterly disappointed that they didn’t, I mean what’s the point? They had some games and some really bad singing. I guess they were trying to be as Irish as possible but fell flat in comparison. Of course the most disappointing thing is definitely on the non-promotion Guinness Drafts!! How can that be? Who gives a fuck about St Patrick’s Day here? Who gives a shit about Shamrocks? Malaysians need to remember that day as a day they give 50% off for the stouts! I am not being an el cheapo but that’s how the M’sian mentality works. They don’t talk about the great DJ, the great decorations and the great games…they just talk about the cheap stout they had! And if there should be an event again next year, this will be the thing that they’ll be looking forward to! It’s like Oktoberfest where they have big discounts on beers, this is what I’m talking about. People here would associate that day with that. And plus I hear other places in the world give out free beers on St Patrick’s Day…Well, enough about that. Maybe I just really expected more..

Have you guys tried that Bologne Gion Bread? I don’t really know what is it really called cause it says Bologne (which is a city in Italy) on the banner and it says Gion (which is a city in Kyoto) on the plastic bag. So what is what? Well for now, I assume it’s called Gion Bread, and it cost a whopping RM18 bucks for a loaf. A normal loaf of Gardenia would set you back for about RM1.80? So you have some math calculation to do there, in short more bread than you can eat! However, despite the highway robbery price tag…there’s always a queue, and you may have guessed it..SOLD OUT! They started out as a stall outside of JUSCO Mid Valley…I think? Or maybe not, as I’ve seen it before at the Bon Odori fair at the Matshushita Sports Centre in June 06…so they may have set it up somewhere else before. The bread is cut into thick slices and they are buttered. They recommend that you give it a light toast to give that light crispiness on the surface and yet soft inside…very much like a Mcdonald’s French Fries minus the deep fry. I like it very much, especially when I have two slices of Honey Turkey Ham, two slices of Salami and a thick slice of Parma Ham, some mayo, some mustard, a slice of cheddar, lettuce and tomatoes, sandwiched in between. It makes a really good lunch! Better than O’Brien’s ! Well, the bread anyways…their relishes and that darn good turkey bacon are still a standout.
Nevertheless, bread will always be bread…of course their technique of making the bread is somewhat unique as they claim it to be…they can fool anyone, I mean how many of us have worked in a bread factory before? I guess as well, it’s the fresh and imported ingredients as well. Yes, yes…it makes a really good bread…and you really really can eat it on its own….again with that coffee craze of mind. However, for a staple diet of breakfast every morning, the price is a tad bit HIGH! I think for folks like me…LIKE ME…. breads such as this would be shelved away in my list as indulgences. It’s nice, but not to die for anyways.
Attended my cous wedding at the Banker’s Club on Sunday. Small place but it was pretty ok. It fitted about 18 tables, only close relatives were invited, you can feel the togetherness. I feel that sometimes in a wedding it’s more important, rather gathering a bunch of people you have to call out of obligation, many of which who do not really wanna come, yes out of obligation as well. It was my cousin who is now residing in Australia and married to a Filipino. You have his folks and sisters from the States coming to KL to attend the wedding. The food was ok, typical Chinese cuisine, the roast chicken and the fried rice was good. Apparently they didn’t have a karaoke system there, and Chinese will always be Chinese…they just want to sing!! So the night was filled with acapella numbers, some good some just downright horrible…the horrible ones I imagine are the equivalent of stand up comedies for me, rather than a torment in some cases. Yours truly’s dad sang as well, by the request of my uncle and aunty…oddly he chose Ave Maria..hmmm…Oh the groom sang a Frank Sinatra number as well, ‘It had to be you’. He neither sounded like Frank nor Harry. Well, it was a surprise anyways, a song he dedicated to my cousin, his wife. Strangely, he kinda stressed on the part of the song where it goes, “With All of your faults I love you still”….hmmm….
I guess it was a nice wedding, short of the extravagance that everyone is so accustomed to nowadays, it was just nice.
I’ve been listening to The Shins lately, their song, “Phantom Limb”. The MTV has the band singing and kids in some theather play as well. I just don’t the MTV sometimes, maybe I don’t try hard enough to try to comprehend it. Whatever the reason, it is a nice song. Call to Apathy was one of their better hits as well. Here is the Lyrics to Phantom Limb….

Phantom Limb – The Shins MP3

Frozen into coats,
White girls of the North,
Fire past one, fire the one
They are the fabled lambs,
A Sunday ham,
The ancient snow.

And they can float above the grass,
In circles if they tried,
A latent power I know they hide,
To keep some hope alive,
That a girl like I
Could ever try,
Could ever try.

So we just skirt the hallway signs,
A phantom and a fly,
Follow the lines and wonder why
There’s no connection.

And weakened falling eyes,
In cheap shots from the tribe,

And we’re often in Marcus’ porch again,
For another afternoon of the goat-head tunes,
And pilfered booze.

We wander through her mama’s house,
The milk from the window lights,
Family portrait circa ninety-five,
This is that foreign land,
With the sprayed on tans,
And it all feels fine,
Be it silk or slime,

So, when they tap our mundane heads,
To zombie-walk in our stead,
This town seems hardly worth our time,
And we’ll no longer memorize or rhyme,
Too fall along in our crime,
Stepping over what now towers to the sky,
With no connection.

Oooh waooooooo waooooooo
Oooh waooooooo waooooooo
Oooh waooooooo waooooooo
Oooh waooooooo waooooooo

So, when they tap our Mundane heads,
To zombie-walk in our stead,
This town seems hardly worth our time,
And we’ll no longer memorize or rhyme,
Too fall along in our crime,
Stepping over what now towers to the sky,
With no connection.

Sakura Mochi

I got this from a friend who went down to Singapore over the weekend. It’s Sakura Mochi! Apparently it’s a seasonal okashi they have during the blooming of the sakuras. The sakura leaf is salted roofing the mochi. The mochi is sweet and filled with lovely red bean paste. Yummy. I had it with a cup of hot green tea. Simply delightful. I’m gonna learn how to make it.

Japan Fair & Meiji Products!

Lets talk chocolates. I was at Times Square recently and I was delighted to see that they were having a Japan Fair! いいですね!I love fairs such as this. I get all excited at the prospect of the stuffs I’m going to buy. It is the cherry blossom season. I went straight on to the Meiji section. They had many chocolates not available here before, especially the dark / bitter chocolates! My favourite! I was a little concerned that the chocolates would melt as I was there for a movie. Takara, I decided to just grab a few. There were many usual and familiar chocolates there. Of course, the famous Yan Yan and Hello Panda chocolate biscuits were there. There were also Pucca Pretzels, ah…but they have a New York Cheesecake version now. I love New York Cheesecake, about the most heavenly cake on earth, perfectly paired with a cup of steaming black coffee. Illy or Lavazza please, might I add. It goes without saying that I bought it, tasted it at home…and yes it was good. I didn’t pair it with coffee though. Just had it with a frosted mug of Heneiken (leftover supplies from Chinese New Year) and Chelsea on the telly. Boy was that some game!! 3-3!! I think it was cheesecake power!
pretzel.jpg
So many chocolates were there to choose from…among the few that I got are pictured below. Here’s a 99% cocoa bar…I have tasted 76% but never a 99%…it’s basically the freakin’ cocoa bean made into a bar! I’ve not tasted it yet still, but I figure it’s gonna be one bitter chocolate.

Another one is the Chocolate Noir, Venezuelan blend and 63% cocoa. it’s pretty good, not divine like Belgian chocolates but for RM14.99, it’s pretty decent. Individually wrapped thin bars to give that after dinner treat that I enjoy so much. It’s part of my ritual actually. It’s that small bliss’s in life you know.

I bought some small packs of Meiji Chocolife as well, a mint one and a 75% one. I tell you, it was dark chocolate heaven there. How’d they know that I’d be coming?? Those were pretty cheap, at about RM2.99 per pack.

They had a promotion as well, buy above RM30.00 and you get a goodie pack of  Japanese biscuits and nuts. I’m just a sucker for packaging.
What a lovely day it was, I would definitely make another trip there again, I hear they have fairs at Jusco and Isetan as well. Can’t find me…well now you know where…

Yebisu Black Beer

Bought directly from japan, haven’t seen it here before. This is black beer! yebisu-black.jpg

or more technically known as Schwarzbier which are usually Dark Brown to Black and slightly more bitter compare to your lagers and ales. Well how the black colour is developed is through the dark roasted malt.Very much like coffee i suppose.

For Guinness Stout haters this might be one to try as this definitely less bitter. It also has a hint of chocolate or coffee, I can’t really be sure. I definitely like this as it is very easy to drink and it feels light. Although it does not have a strong character unlike the famous Guinness Stout.

I have one more can left and i guess i have to wait for a really good match or movie before i savour the lovely black beer.

Iki Kampai!!

Yamazaki 12 year old Single Malt

Yamazaki 12 year Single Malt Whiskey by the Suntory Group. Itou bought this bottle for me from Japan. I found out that the one featured in Lost In Translation was actually a 30 year old blend, a far more expensive alternative…I wonder how does a 30 year old whiskey taste like…
This one however is comparative to Johnny Walker’s Green Label. I guess it’s a matter of personal taste, but I like this Yamazaki shit. It’s sweet, honeyish, woody and smooth. This is no inferior whiskey as I presumed it to be. I guess the Japanese can do anything, now I know not all whiskey comes from Scotland and Ireland.

On the rocks is best drunk. I just love whiskey on the rocks, especially when the ice melts and blends in with the spirits. It feels somewhat luxurious, that fiery yet cool liquid streaming down your throat. Talking about it makes me wanna have a glass! I just discovered that ‘Mizuwari’ is a way of drinking whiskey with water and ice. Either way is fine, but please please do not drink whiskey with Coke. It’s disrespectful to both Coke and Suntory or even Johnny Walker.. You gotta leave as it is…and just add ice…

Oh, there’s an 18 year old one as well….looks devilish!

Souvenirs From Japan

collage19.jpg

こんばんわ、あなたわそげんきですか. The long holidays has come to an end. I didn’t have one, mine was rather a little here and there, sort of fragmented. As a result, I stayed pretty much in KL, chained at home. I did watch The Departed, directed by Martin Scorcese though. I did finish Dance Dance Dance by Murakami though. Both Ok. Here are some pictures of souvenirs brought back from
Japan. The first one, the red long thing is given to me by my former sensei, Araya san..it reads Kiratan something, I can’t read the Kanji. It’s actually like a big twisties or cheezels. This one taste sweet, like caramel corn. It’s ok, too little if you ask me, you simply just can’t stop at one. So it’s mean! The second one is my favourite of all, it’s a biscuit thingy sandwiching a sweet cream. Lovely with coffee! すごいね!!This one was given by my Japanese boss, Sasai san. The biscuit tasted really milky like, like waffles only biscuit textured. The cream is quite a delight! Enjoyed that very much…only if there was another piece. According to him, this cost about RM4.00 each, so, not too expensive. The last one, given to me by Maeomote San, Chocolate Cheese Cake. It’s White Chocolate if you are wondering where’s the chocolate. This one is way too small, but again delightfully delicious with a cuppa. These people are just mean…how is one possibly enough? Can’t complain I suppose, after all, they did bother. Well, I had quite a chompful day today. Plus, it was great company with the new coffee I bought from Marks & Spencer, Café Noir. Not as fragrant as I hoped for it to be but it’s ok. dsc00200.JPG

Myojo Chamera Tonkotsu – Myojo Pork Soup Ramen

collage2.jpg

RM4.70 at Isetan. I’m sure everyone would be familiar with this brand. Their Mee Goreng Pedas rocks and simply one of the best. This one has a more milky & richer colour to it, with a touch of sesame. The soup is great! I added a few drops of sesame oil just for that richer taste. However, if you prefer the clearer types or less flavourful, like shoyu & shio, then this is not for you. This time around I added some wakame, tofu, spring onions, egg and bacon. Egg, I can’t stress enough the importance of an egg in an instant noodle meal.

The combination is mind-blowing as it really set me back for a really good lunch! The noodle texture is まま,so-so. Not as thick as I would like it to be. The soup was pretty good, of course thanks to my enhancement of boiling it with a few strips of slightly fried bacon. The natural fats and oils from the bacon gave the soup a porkier flavour. The meal stuffed me quite a bit…man was I full!

I recommend braised pork or even roast pork if you have some! Not recommended for heart patients.

Fujikko Benri Wakame (Salted Seaweed)

 dsc00175.JPG

This is dried wakame, or seaweed. Just toss a couple of these dried tea leaf looking seaweed in some soup or instant noodles and they’ll expand in size. It’s quite a treat with Miso Soup and yes, instant Ramen. It’s very easy and convenient as well. It’s pretty tasteless but it does provide you with something to bite, accompanying your soup, much like your leafy greens. This packet cost RM11.70 at Isetan. Don’t worry you can use it many many times as there are loads of it inside this resealable bag. I always have it at home for a quick instant noodle fix!

House’s Instant Curry with Meat

collage5.jpg

Brand : House Retort Curry with Meat. I don’t know what the hell Retort means here. This is ready to eat curry. As the diagram shows, just dip the packet in there for about 10 minutes and you have yourself a meal. Something like the Brahmins curry we have here. This one is filled with beef pieces and potatoes. Don’t let the front cover fool you with all the huge chunks of meat and vegetables because as you can see, there aren’t that many. The sauce however is thick and the beef flavour in there made it quite enjoyable with rice. I gobbled it down in seconds. I wished that there were more beef though, the beef was great. 3 starsAvailable in Jusco and Isetan.
